Don Voisine: enact/re(d)act |
||||||
Don Voisine is well known for taut and refined geometric abstract paintings in oil and oil and acrylic, executed on linen, canvas, and wood panels. Flanked top and bottom by bands of color, simple geometric shapes are set against light or dark grounds. Diamond shapes – parallelograms, rhombuses, and rhomboids – predominate in these new paintings, although there are several works in the show featuring bold rectilinear forms, crosses, and X-shapes. The dominant geometries are rendered in rich blacks, deep blues, and vivid reds, with flanking bands that set up a lively color contrast. In some paintings, additional narrow strips of color adjacent to the flanking bands serve to create an optical charge and a sense of speed and movement. New to these paintings is the incorporation of differently colored smaller geometries within the diamond forms. In some, sharp angular forms seem to pierce the shapes, while in others X forms or triangular shapes are placed within the larger diamonds. In several paintings, shapes appear to be stacked and layered atop one another. This is achieved in part by rendering some shapes as translucent veils of color, in addition to the artist’s signature use of directional brushwork and contrasting matte and glossy surfaces. Overall, the attention to differentiated surface textures enhances spatial movement in the paintings. While they can be seen to evoke sculptural or architectonic spaces, the forms can also feel as though they are hovering or spinning in space. Within a simple format, Voisine’s investigations into the possibilities of geometric abstraction are seemingly endless. When asked about his exhibition title, enact/re(d)act, he noted, “It describes how I work: I make a mark or a shape (enact); respond to it (react); change or simplify it (redact.)” Don Voisine has been exhibiting his paintings nationally and internationally in gallery and museum shows for just over fifty years. His paintings and works on paper are in the permanent collections of museums across the United States and in Germany. Voisine’s exhibitions have been reviewed extensively in such publications as The New York Times, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, Two Coats of Paint, ARTnews, Art in America, Artcritical, The New Criterion, and The Wall Street Journal, among many others. In 2023, Voisine was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by The University of Maine, Fort Kent. Additionally, he is a National Academician and a member of the American Abstract Artists. |   |
