David Mann
October 10 - November 11, 2007

In his current series of luminous abstract paintings, David Mann continues to explore the mystery and wonderment generated by natural forms invisible to the unaided human eye. His canvases suggest ambiguous spaces and structures of the natural world which appear to exist simultaneously on microscopic and cosmic scales. Collections of glowing particles float through otherworldly plasma, reminding the viewer of the mutability of matter and energy, the inexorable drive of biological forces, the vastness of the universe and the scope of human understanding – that we are able to ponder the beauty of both a single electron and the expanse of countless galaxies. Mann’s paintings typically glow with an inner light and achieve the illusion of a deep space. The matte surfaces of the paintings heighten these effects and encourage the feeling that the viewer could enter their bizarre atmospheres. At times the cellular forms suspended within these ethers seem momentarily serene, as if adrift in the celestial firmament. At other times they appear to be rapidly converging or expanding, reminiscent of the genesis or dissolution of microbial life in some deep aquatic realm. The mystery of Mann’s paintings ultimately comes from his depiction of moments of transition which remind the viewer of the fundamental forces and process of the universe.
