In this exhibition, sculptures of wedding and birthday cakes reflect Allen’s long-standing interest in the use of commonplace materials in her exploration of the realm of domestic desire. Her cakes are hand-sewn from latex balloons with great attention given to the floral clusters, elaborate ornamentation and surface embellishments on her pseudo-desserts. Allen’s skill as a seamstress is evident in these works, which are remarkable for both their meticulous craftsmanship and for the playfulness with which they comment on desire and consumption. Also in the exhibition are a group of drawings in colored pencil of Japanese food, a favorite cuisine of the artist, not only for its flavors but for the exquisite care given to its presentation. | |||||||
