Jim Dingilian's delicate drawings are made on found silver-plated trays which the artist coats with candle smoke. Images are produced on the coated faces of the trays through a subtractive process, using various implements to gently remove the soot. The resulting subtle representations shimmer in and out of sight as the observer moves around the work, much like the experience of viewing a daguerreotype. The finished pieces are not fixed but exist in a fragile state. The slightest touch will smear the image and over time, tarnish will progressively obscure the surface. For the artist, the cumulative effect refers to the fleeting and elusive qualities of memory and the ability of photography to disrupt the process of recollection. |   |
