Stephen Hannock
April 28 - May 28, 2005

In this exhibition, luminous vistas of real places--the Hoosic River Valley in western Massachusetts, Madison Square Park in lower Manhattan, and Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskill Mountains--set the mood for the stories of people and events referred to in the hand-written text and articles Stephen Hannock has collaged into the underpainting. Each of the monumental paintings is a highly personal tribute to important people in the artist's life, an homage to specific individuals and the places where they've had an impact, or the places that have influenced them. The journal-like text and the newspaper and magazine clippings collaged throughout provide more than just visual texture to the work; they also serve as a diary of the artist's life, and record his relationships with friends and family at specific locales. .
