Ranging in subject matter from surreal representation to abstract topographies, the work of Angie Drakopoulos, Ruth Waldman, and Laura Sharp Wilson is linked by several shared aspects: an interest in the careful, even delicate use of linearity and color, an intimacy of scale, and an engagement with biomorphic forms. Angie Drakopoulos creates layered, symmetrically patterned, lace-like paintings in resin. Using an image archive, she first digitally manipulates then hand-paints and layers her subjects onto pastel-colored grounds. Her work reveals her interest in exploring underlying, universal structures or systems of both the natural and metaphysical worlds. Ruth Waldman's colored pencil drawings depict a fantastical, Boschean landscape of vegetal and corporeal forms fastened and pierced across a taut, curvilinear framework. Her delicate yet vividly colored compositions explore the duality and symbiosis between creepy fetishistic forms and whimsical childlike imagery. In her highly personal, idiosyncratic paintings, Laura Sharp Wilson depicts psychologically and emotionally charged environments where the fecundity of nature is set against the imminent destruction and loss of the natural world. Her botanic imagery is imbued with anthropomorphic vitality. |   |
