With Jean Lowe’s enamel-painted papier-mâché sculptures, weighty and imperious assumptions and ideological constructs are lampooned and given a veneer of beauty through the use of fragile, hand-made and unassuming materials. In an installation titled Empire Style, Lowe's updated Napoleonic salon contrasts her slightly cartoonish antique furnishings and ornaments with hand-painted wall paper depicting present-day American suburbia, in which strip mall parking lots have replaced 19th-century vistas of idealized nature. Lowe deftly nests a contemporary sense of dislocation within the midst of a faux neo-classical setting, reminding the viewer of the power establishment’s reliance on style to absorb, insinuate into, and project cultural ideals. Also exhibited are shelves and books from The Library of Dr. Pohatten, as well as Apollo and Daphne, a series of cast pieces referring to Bernini’s sculpture of the same title. |   |
