For nearly a decade, Maureen McQuillan has been exhibiting works using viscous ink lines embedded in resin or acrylic polymer; in her new work McQuillan has changed her ground from paper to canvas in order to create larger and more intricately layered imagery than was previously possible. Here, multiple translucent drawings overlap one another to create a stack of interlocking images. Successive wave-like bands thus combine to create a topology of honeycomb-like structures, oscillating lines like variable frequency sound waves and large grids which stretch, twist and overlap to map undulating surfaces within the work. Now, as before, the images appear to be derived from technology of some sort, but actually arise out of a systematic overlaying of the surface, a mechanically repetitive process that is, paradoxically, also open to incident and chance. By drawing out the ink in a series of tightly controlled actions, McQuillan achieves images which have the appearance of being too complex to have been made by hand. The optical effects and spatial ambiguities combine to engender an energetic atmosphere of instability and uncertainty – one that perhaps reflects similar conditions prevailing in the contemporary world at large. |   |
