Aric Obrosey's works on paper for this exhibition are made by meticulously hand-printing ink using one-inch square ebony blocks which have been carved with a rich variety of dense and intricate lace patterns. The labor-intensive, unique wood engravings that result range from an enlarged grid-like design of elemental lace units to a cut paper sculpture of work gloves, printed with lace patterns on both the exterior and interior surfaces and embellished with lace cut-outs. Also included are surreal and humorous images of lace rib steaks and lamb chops which the artist transforms into fleshy yet delicate decorative motifs. While mining a nearly obsolete craft tradition, Obrosey transforms his creations into unique and inventive statements concerning obsessive beauty and the relationship of hand-crafted objects to mass production. |   |
