Pete Schulte: Chamber Music |
||||||
Pete Schulte’s drawings are notable for their subtle and nuanced touch, sophisticated and refined surfaces, and for possessing a mysterious quality of softly glowing light enhanced by an understated use of color. The simplicity of the precisely defined shapes and spaces he creates, ranging from geometric and architectural to those evoking natural forms, appear to be at one with their paper substrate.   The daily devotional practice of drawing has been at the core of Schulte’s artistic investigations for the past twenty-eight years. He describes a “sincere aspiration that I might unearth a non-verbal space of quiet and calm in the midst of our increasingly calamitous culture.” In this exhibition, small-scale drawings, none over 13 inches square, are made with graphite pencils, pigment, ink, and colored pencils; they invite slow and careful consideration. Like chamber music, the atmosphere is intimate, with discrete, distinctly defined elements coalescing harmoniously. This is particularly apparent in the seven Collections drawings in the exhibition. Each is comprised of from one to four small drawings contained within a single frame. Their selection and grouping as well as their placement within the frame generates a dialogue and interplay between the individual elements, while also activating the interstitial space of the frames they inhabit.   Also included in the exhibition are Drawings in Space/Time, five pedestal-mounted objects, each housing an individual drawing. As Schulte has noted, “Over the years, with certain drawings, I have noticed that designations of top, bottom, left and right have come to seem increasingly arbitrary. In such cases, these designations have been determined and necessary only because the piece needs to be hung on a wall. I have long believed that it would be beneficial for this type of drawing to be more fully experienced in the round and open to the ambulatory movement of the viewer. It not only serves the works, but also subverts our traditional expectations for viewing drawings.”   Pete Schulte (b.1970, Rock Island, IL) received his M.F.A. in painting and drawing from The University of Iowa in 2008. He resides in Birmingham and teaches at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Since 2002 he has shown his work in gallery and museum exhibitions across the country and in Europe. Schulte’s work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic,, Art in America, New Art Examiner, and Maake Magazine, among others. |   |
