The British-born Morley Price's ceramics are characterized by numerous undulating flanges: paper-thin vanes or wings which run vertically around each piece and convey a tremendous sense of movement. She begins each piece by hand-building a central hollow vessel. Onto this armature she laboriously builds the projecting wings by adding many small coils of clay. Even the energetically spiraling flanges are slowly built up bit-by-bit, rather than simply being twisted after the fact.     Though these forms refer to utilitarian vessels, the rippling and impossibly thin flanges ultimately move the work beyond that association. Instead, Morley Price strives for a sculptural harmony inspired by her personal repertoire of forms and by Japanese paper decorations which unfold into intricately patterned spheres. |   |
