Reed Danziger’s new works on paper continue her exploration and development of a visual language that captures vibrant, energetic moments of flux and transition. Her works are multi-faceted and complex, employing a vocabulary of abstracted imagery derived from nature, science, and mathematics. Ink, graphite, gouache, acrylic, and watercolor are layered on paper using a combination of stenciling, screening, and free-hand painting. The drawings are created slowly and intuitively, with each mark and passage made in reaction to what came before as the layers accumulate. Washes of color are overlaid with intricate and precise linear marks in dynamic compositions: episodes of energy shift and reorganize, settle into stillness, then gather force and momentum. Translucent passages of muted tones are punctuated with vibrant and richly colored geometric shapes and linear elements that intersect, repeat, and collide with one another. As Danziger notes: I think of this work as representing imagined narratives of events which are in the process of occurring: a build-up of pressure, a breaking point, or a point of impact. My intent in capturing these moments is to also release the drawing’s need to conform to any linear depiction of time, or to follow true spatial perspectives. I am interested in creating a space in which events seem to occur simultaneously, both above or below or in front of or behind one another. These narratives allow me to explore and make sense of the unexpected, and to express my interest in trying to understand the intangible…As I build up the drawing with intricate marks and layers, the flow of energy begins to take on a life of its own. The compositions become disorienting as the foreground and backgrounds merge, at the same time as they pull apart, twist and collapse, or flatten onto themselves. I attempt to visualize the act of an energy exchange, capturing both the beauty and the chaos of these moments. Danziger has been exhibiting her work nationally and internationally for the past twenty-five years, including solo and group exhibitions at Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco, Robischon Gallery in Denver, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, and the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, among others. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation in Los Angeles, the Achenbach Foundation in San Francisco, Wichita’s Ulrich Museum, and the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies Program. |
